Samiam are a five-piece punk/emo band from Berkeley, California that formed in 1988 and are still active today. They are one of the longest-running and most consistent bands in their hemisphere, carving out a distinct sound with chunky, melodic guitars, a pumping rhythm section and impassioned vocals. Over the years they put 8 full-length albums alongside a multitude of other releases. The_Here we are again, wrapping up the past 12 months with the albums that made this year definitive to me. This year was especially excruciating, as there were tons of fantastic albums, but here a condensed 50. As always, keep in mind that this isn't a definitive or objective "best of" list, just a collection of personal favourites in relative order. You can check out a Spotify playlist of all+Planes Mistaken For Stars were a four-piece post-hardcore band that formed in Peoria, Illinois in 1997. Shortly after, they relocated to Denver, Colorado in 1999. The band self-released their debut in 1998, which was reissued by Deep Elm Records the next year. This was followed up by an incredible split with The Appleseed Cast and Race Car Riot, also released by Deep Elm, and two EPs put out,Jawbox are a four-piece post-hardcore band from Washington, DC that formed in 1989. The band was started by vocalist/guitarist J. Robbins, b-Ed Gein was an American interior designer were a three-piece grindcore/hardcore band from Syracuse, New York that formed in 2001 before amicably breaking up in 2018. Its members reconvened shortly thereafter to form Shadow Snakes, a new project that veered away from the legacy of their former band. Sonically, Ed Gein were chaotic and discordant while remaining distincly rhythmic, with throat/Johnny Hobo And The Freight Trains was a folk punk project helmed by Pat The Bunny (Pat Schneeweis) that were active from 2000 to 2007. They were mostly based out of Brattleboro, Vermont. I know I've covered two of Pat's other major projects, Wingnut Dishwashers Union and Ramshackle Glory, so while revisiting Love Songs For The Apocalypse, I figured it only fitting to include his first major+By this point they had really established their distinct sound, which blended the syncopated dual guitar melancholy of Sunny Day Real Estate with the energetic power pop of Weezer. Toss in some Fugazi and Jawbreaker influence to boot too. While their lyrics were still personal and heartfelt, they also brought a more light-hearted, almost comedic approach to songwriting, particularly with their
